Dusty's thoughts of the day...
Good morning, friends! Do you have the mid-week blues? Well, I am here to cheer you up! I hope everyone's week has gotten off to a good start. Turkey day is coming in hot! I can't wait!!!
My thoughts this morning are on the late, great, Fred Rogers. That's right, Mr. Rogers from the Neighborhood. Like most folks my age, I grew up watching the popular PBS TV show when I was a little tyke. I never truly understood the messages he was sharing; I just knee he sang funny songs and played with puppets, but my goodness he was so much more than that.
I watched a clip last night while eating dinner of an interview with him. He was one of the best human beings to ever walk this planet. He had so much compassion, understanding, patience, and acceptance. He had what I can only come to call "emotional genius."
What is emotional genius? I am glad you asked, well according to author Karla McLaren it is described as "the ability to harness the power of emotions to achieve personal and professional success. It involves understanding and utilizing emotions as a source of information and energy to navigate life's challenges."
That sounds like a good character trait to have, and Fred Rogers was the master of it. He broke barriers in gender, race, creed, and age understanding and acceptance in ways most cannot imagine. And that was in the late 1950's and 1960's. I can only imagine the barriers he would conquer today.
He wasn't perfect to be sure. I have read his biography and listened to many of the interviews of those who have knew him. He was a perfectionist when it came to his TV show, a trait that some found to be challenging at times, but he was never overbearing. He sought to understand human emotion and interaction and reflect that through his music and scripts.
I would have loved to have met Fred and spend even five minutes talking one on one with him. I could never dream of achieving the level of emotional genius he accomplished, but I strive to. He has become a role model for me in many ways. His kindness, his understanding, his courageousness. I have a long way to go, but I think if we all put a little effort in, we will be better for the journey. That is my goal. I am not looking to the end of the destination, but rather the path taken to get there.
So, on this rainy Wednesday try to channel a little of that Mr. Rogers in all of us. If you're having trouble doing that, go watch a few clips of his show or even better some of his interviews. It will change your mindset. I guarantee it. Love all of you out there and have a great day!!!
